KNITTING - a new passion

While enjoying semi-retirement for the last couple of years, I have become an avid knitter which keeps my hands busy while at the beach or pool, traveling, etc. ~ places where I can't paint easily. In fact I have to admit that its become a bit of an addiction, and I absolutely love it!

So, about a year ago, Nancy and I started a group of knitters/crocheters called the The Heartwarmers that meet monthly to create donations for a charity organization called Care To Knit. (For more information you can go to their website: www.caretoknit.org ) We knit chemo hats, preemie blankets/hats, scarves, arm warmers, etc. while forming new friendships as well.

We meet at The Harborfields Library in Greenlawn on the first Tuesday night of each month at 6:30PM and on the second Friday of each month at 10:00AM. Our group is open to all needlers who would like to make a commitment to help give back to our community.

During our first year The Heartwarmers have been busy

We took on the challenge of creating a variety of knitted squares for a special lap blanket that turned out to be very lovely. We are really proud of our first group endeavor.

In February we organized what turned out to be a LARGE "Knit In" where over 85 people came together to knit squares which were later assembled into about 38 children's blankets that Care To Knit donated to local charities such as The Family service League, Schneiders Hospital, Winthrop Pediatric Cancer Center and others.

In May we sponsored a "Book Party" at The Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Huntington where we celebrated the publication of a new book, Knitting To Share - 25 Projects For Those Who Care, in which we were featured.

AND NOW

We're hosting another "KNIT IN" to create hats of all kinds which will be donated to several local charities. Please bring your needles or hooks and come join us or just stop in to see what's going on.
